It’s not unusual to have things about your smile that you want to improve. From chips to gaps, there are all kinds of things that make each smile look different from the next. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry can help those who are looking to achieve a more uniform beam. Among all of the cosmetic dental treatments on the market, porcelain veneers are one of the most popular. If you’re considering veneers, you may be wondering if composite or porcelain is best for you. Keep reading to learn about five factors to consider when deciding which veneers to get.

#1: Materials

Porcelain veneers are thin shells that cover the entire front of the teeth they are placed on. They are made from dental-grade porcelain, which is incredibly durable. Additionally, since porcelain is non-porous, they are highly stain resistant.

Composite veneers, which are also called cosmetic dental bonding, use the same material as tooth-colored fillings. This composite resin is more likely to stain and break than porcelain veneers. Even so, it should hold up well enough to normal wear and tear.

#2: Longevity

On average, porcelain veneers last 10 to 15 years. Since a small amount of tooth enamel is removed to ensure that they adhere properly and don’t look bulky, this treatment is considered to be permanent.

Though composite veneers only last four to eight years, this treatment doesn’t require permanent alterations to be made to your smile. So, while veneer wearers will need to have them replaced at the end of their lifespan, those who undergo cosmetic bonding can decide whether they want to do it again.

#3: Appearance

Both porcelain and composite veneers are color matched to these surrounding teeth so they effortlessly blend with the rest of your smile. Additionally, both options correct an array of imperfections, including minor alignment problems, discoloration, chips, cracks, gaps, and misshapen teeth.

#4: Process

As previously mentioned, a small amount of tooth enamel is removed to attach porcelain veneers. Your dentist will then take impressions of your teeth and send them off to a dental lab where your permanent veneers will be created. You will be fitted with temporary veneers to protect your smile in the meantime.

Composite veneers usually only take one appointment to attach. They also don’t require any enamel removal. Your dentist will mold the composite material to your teeth and use a special light to harden it. The composite veneers will then be reshaped until they look right.

#5: Price

Though porcelain veneers are more durable and last longer than composite bonding, it also costs a lot more. You can expect to pay anywhere from $925 to $2,500, but the average price is around $1,500 per veneer. On the other hand, composite veneers tend to cost anywhere from $250 to $1,500 per tooth. When deciding which one is best for you, determine which one better fits your needs and your budget.
