But when you’re an adult and a tooth starts to move, it’s not such a good feeling. In fact, it’s a different story entirely. Permanent teeth aren’t supposed to wiggle. If one does, it’s a dental emergency that needs attention sooner rather than later. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Is My Adult Tooth Loose?

There are a few common culprits behind a loose permanent tooth. Knowing what’s causing it can help you understand what kind of treatment you might be looking at.

Gum disease is the most frequent cause. When bacteria build up beneath your gumline and go untreated, they gradually destroy the bone and tissue that hold your pearly whites in place. By the time a tooth feels loose, the damage is often already done, which is exactly why regular checkups are so important.

Trauma is another common culprit. A hit to the mouth during sports, a fall, or even biting down on something unexpectedly hard can loosen a tooth by damaging its supporting structures. Even if the tooth looks fine, there can still be damage in or around it that only an X-ray can find.

What Should You Do Right Away?

The most important thing is to call your dentist as soon as possible. A loose tooth is always considered a dental emergency, and time matters. The sooner you’re seen, the better the chances of saving the tooth.

In the meantime, here’s what to do, and what not to do:

Avoid touching or wiggling the tooth with your fingers or tongue

Don’t chew on that side of your mouth

Apply a cold compress if there’s swelling or pain

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed

Can a Loose Tooth Be Saved?

It depends on the cause and how quickly you act. If the supporting structures are still strong, your dentist may be able to splint the tooth to stabilize it while it heals. If gum disease is the underlying issue, treating the infection and bone loss may allow the tooth to restabilize over time.

That said, if the tooth is too damaged or too loose to save, extraction may be necessary. This is the last resort for your dentist and is always followed by a conversation about tooth replacement options, whether it’s a dental implant or a bridge.

So, if you find that your tooth has a bit too much wiggle room, it’s time to make the call. The sooner you see your dentist, the more options you’ll have.

About the Author

Dr. Tarangini Suggala earned her dental degree abroad before completing dental school a second time at the Boston University Henry M.
